Altai scientists have come up with an eco-friendly way to treat bees from varroatosis

Scientists from the Altai Agricultural University (AAU) have proposed to treat bees from the most common and harmful for beekeeping varroatosis using pine meal. The specialists have developed a device, which allows to use this preparation in dosage, said in the university.

According to the candidate of biological sciences, associate professor of the Department of Private Zootechnics Sergey Kuzovlev, varroatosis causes great harm to beekeeping, reducing honey productivity of bees and their pollinating ability. Until now, the apiaries in Russia used a chemical method to treat bees, but now the Altai researchers have received a patent for the development of technology to produce a pine-vitamin feed additive for farm animals and birds by recycling logging waste.

In order to ensure efficient treatment of bees with coniferous meal in a beehive, scientists have come up with a special device which allows dosage of the preparation. The conifer meal neutralizes the Varroa mite's movement apparatus, because the micro particles get into the suction cups of its forepaws. Studies have shown that after treatment of bee families with coniferous flour, the mite loses its ability to stay on the body of the bee and falls.

Period of effective action of the preparation depends on the state of bee family, movement of bees and mite. The more active the movement, the faster the preparation is distributed, and the therapeutic effect is achieved. According to experiments, the effectiveness of the method reaches 85.1%.
