Russian developments in the field of rocket engines formed the basis of the Raptor engines being created for the Starship spacecraft, Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder Ilon Musk told in an interview with Everyday Astronaut Youtube channel.
He admitted that he spends a lot of time studying the design of Russian rocket engines. Some of the designs are used in the creation of the Starship propulsion system. These are Raptor engines, which, according to Musk, are an improvement of the Russian oxygen-methane liquid-propellant engines. He noted that Russia has already created hundreds of similar engine designs.
SpaceX Starship - manned space reusable spacecraft, which is being developed by SpaceX in 2012. The company plans to launch Starship with a cargo to Mars in 2022 and organize a manned flight in 2024. In addition, NASA has selected SpaceX as one of three contractors to develop landing systems for the moon in 2024 as part of the Artemis program. On August 3, 2021, SpaceX revealed the completed Super Heavy booster of the Starship SN20 prototype, which is expected to make its first orbital flight. It is equipped with 29 Raptor engines.
