Russian students won gold at the European Junior Informatics Olympiad

Russian students have won four gold medals at the Fifth European Junior Olympiad for high school students on computer science, the country's Education Ministry said.

"The Russian team was the only team that won more than one gold medal. All four students, included in the Russian team, won four gold medals, while two boys took the absolute first and third places," said the ministry.

This year the competition was hosted by the Romanian city of Ploiesti. As last year, due to the difficult epidemiological situation, schoolchildren took part in the Olympiad remotely from their countries.

This year the Olympiad brought together a record number of schoolchildren - 107 official participants from 30 countries, as well as 64 non-competitive participants.

This year Russia was represented by Alexey Vasiliev, Darya Grekova, Ivan Piskarev from Moscow, and Renat Karimov from the Lyceum named after N.I. Lobachevsky of Kazan Federal University.

The Department explained that the competition team was formed from schoolchildren under the age of 15 who had achieved good results at the All-Russian Olympiad on Informatics. Then the children underwent in-depth training and selection to the junior team at the training camp.

Under the terms of the Olympiad this year each country could present, in addition to the main team, an additional team. According to the results of the performance pupils of the additional team also showed excellent results. The additional Russian team consisted of Andrey Tsoy from Novosibirsk, Ivan Chasovskikh from Khimki (Moscow region), Anton Martynov from St. Petersburg, and Pyotr Losev from Moscow. Andrey Tsoi got the equivalent of a gold medal, and the rest of the team got the equivalent of a silver medal.
