Exports of buckwheat and buckwheat from Russia will resume on September 1

The ban on exports of Russian buckwheat, buckwheat groats and buckwheat grain, which started on June 5, ceases to be in effect on September 1.

Temporary restriction of buckwheat and buckwheat groats export until 31 August was initiated by the Russian Ministry of Agriculture in order to preserve necessary volumes of groats on the domestic market and to prevent sharp price fluctuations. The authorities noted that the export of Russian buckwheat increased significantly to a number of importing countries against the background of the current world situation. Thus, the largest buyers of Russian buckwheat from April 2020 to April 2021 were China, Latvia, Ukraine, Lithuania and Japan.

The head of the ministry Dmitry Patrushev earlier did not rule out that the ban could be extended. According to him, the product belongs to the socially important, which is why it is important to provide the country's population with it and at an affordable price. However, the final decision will be made based on the results of the harvesting campaign. The Ministry has forecasted that the harvest in 2021 is expected to be bigger than last year's. In 2020, Russian agrarians harvested 893 thousand tons of buckwheat against 786 thousand tons in 2019.
