Sakhalin authorities plan to achieve carbon neutrality of the region in 2025

The Sakhalin Oblast government plans to achieve carbon neutrality in 2025, said Vyacheslav Alenkov, Deputy Chairman of the regional government.

"We have made a commitment to achieve carbon neutrality in 2025. These are serious commitments, but they are not empty words. We have conducted an inventory, an inventory of absorption emissions - we have, according to confirmed estimates, 1.2 million tons, that is 10%, the difference between emissions and absorption," Alenkov said during the Eastern Economic Forum - 2021.

He noted that the region is already working on a number of environmental and climate projects. "We have a roadmap, agreed with Gazprom, on 100% gasification of the region by 2025. Taking into account the fact that we are an entirely island-based region, it will not only be piped gas, but LNG as well. We are one of the pioneers here", - explained the Vice Chairman of the Sakhalin Government.

In addition to that, regional authorities are planning to convert 100 thousand vehicles to NGV fuel within five years, and also develop electric transport. A major project that will be implemented in this direction, including the establishment of hydrogen cluster, said Alenkov.

The Eastern Economic Forum takes place in Vladivostok from the second to the fourth of September. The main theme of this year's event is "New Opportunities for the Far East in a Changing World". The forum is organised by the Roscongress Foundation.
