Novaya Gazeta editor-in-chief receives Nobel Peace Prize

Dmitry Muratov, editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, and Philippine journalist Maria Resse received the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded them the prize for their "efforts to defend freedom of speech, which is a prerequisite for democracy and lasting peace.

According to committee chair Berit Reiss-Andersen, "democratic societies prevent wars and conflicts." She called it the best defense "that societies could build against wars and conflicts." However, as the head of the committee stressed, democracy is not possible without freedom of speech.

She called the laureates "very brave, outstanding journalists" and awarding them the prize shows what it means to be a journalist and how freedom of speech can be used "even in very difficult, limited circumstances."

Dmitry Muratov was the first Russian to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1990, Mikhail Gorbachev was awarded the prize.
