Rusatom Healthcare plans to open a state-of-the-art pharmaceutical production facility for isotope medical products at the site of the Karpov Institute of Physical Chemistry in Obninsk in 2022 with a total investment of about 9 billion rubles, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia said.

The project will be implemented in accordance with international GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards.

"With the opening of the plant ROSATOM will change Russia's disposition in the international nuclear medicine market. The facility at the Karpov Institute will become the world's leading enterprise producing radiopharmaceuticals in an expanded range of products," the report says.

It is specified that implementation of the project was a response to growing demand in Russian and global healthcare for radiopharmaceuticals that are used to provide high-tech medical care to patients with oncological, rheumatological, endocrinological and cardiological diseases.

Diagnostics using radiopharmaceuticals makes it possible to detect diseases in several tens of millions of people around the world and start therapy with isotope products in time. In the future, therapeutic procedures with radiopharmaceuticals could help hundreds of thousands of people a year, the department explained.

"Construction of a modern radiopharmaceutical production facility in accordance with international GMP standards is another step towards creation of a unique medical ecosystem for the market, which aims to increase the availability of life-saving medical technologies for a wide range of patients in Russia and abroad. "Centralization of the fullest possible range of services in a single loop will reduce costs at each stage of production, which will reduce the cost of radiopharmaceuticals for the residents of our country," said Natalia Komarova, General Director of Rusatom Healthcare.
