The assembly of a new wintering complex of the Vostok station has begun in Antarctica, the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute reported.

The complex will replace outdated designs of the 1957 assembly and will allow scientists to conduct research in comfortable conditions. The station will stand on 36 supports with a height of 3 meters, which will allow it to remain unoccupied for many years. All systems have double or triple redundancy, a two-year supply of fuel and products is provided.

The new complex should provide comfortable work of scientists in Antarctica with 15 people wintering and 35 people per season.

Vostok Station is located 1253 km from the South Pole. This is the only inland Antarctic station currently used by Russia. The thickness of the ice cover under it is 3700 meters.
