Russia and Algeria have concluded a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy

Rosatom State Corporation and the Commissariat for Atomic Energy of Algeria announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy.

The document was signed by Director General of Rosatom Sergey Kirienko and Chairman of the Algerian Atomic Energy Commissariat Mohamed Derdour.

The Memorandum is aimed at formulating specific strategies for business partnership between Russia and Algeria in the energy and non-energy areas of peaceful atom use. In particular, in the energy sector it is envisaged the possibility of joint implementation of the project on construction of a nuclear power plant in Algeria on the basis of Russian technology; cooperation in the field of nuclear fuel cycle; participation of the Algerian side in experiments on the IBIR reactor; cooperation in the field of nuclear safety; education and training of personnel, including education of Algerian students and specialists in Russian universities in nuclear specialties.

Non-energy directions include continuation of further discussion and evaluation of possibilities of construction of the Center of Nuclear Science and Technology on the basis of the research reactor of Russian design, construction of isotope production complex for Algerian industry, centers of nuclear medicine, centers of irradiation to increase efficiency of agricultural activity etc.

The parties will develop a joint road map for the development of Algeria's peaceful nuclear programme, which will provide for the specification of projects of mutual interest and be implemented by joint working groups.
