Scientists from the university in Astrakhan have created a food film and coatings made of gelatin.

As tests have shown, this innovative gelatin-based film is not inferior to its polymer counterpart and can protect food from spoilage by slowing down moisture and gas migration processes.

Another advantage of the new product is that it can be a "conductor" of various antioxidants, enzyme or functional additives in food. The coating can retain its properties for over 100 days at room temperature.

Scientists have created several types of films at once. The first is characterized by low stretch, it can be used for storing and freezing food, and when hermetically sealed it is suitable for packing frozen meat products or instant porridge.

The second film can be used to cover food from getting stale.

Experts expect wide distribution of such film, including the supply of this product outside the country. For example, the European Union after 2021 will stop using disposable plastic objects, but now there are not many alternatives, which would be characterized by quality, environmental friendliness and safety.
