Polar seed production is being revived in Murmansk

On the Kola Peninsula they have started to create a seed center, which will produce high quality forage grass seeds, which have long been bred by the Polar specialists for agriculture of the Russian North.

The new center will be organized at the polar experimental station of the All-Russian Institute of Plant Industry. According to the experts the region can successfully engage in cattle breeding, including dairy farming, but it needs sufficient fodder supply. According to scientists, soon agricultural enterprises will be supplying elite fodder.

According to the representatives of the Murmansk Agricultural Experimental Station, eight farms of the region have a highly productive herd of Holmogor cows mixed with the Holstein breed. These cows are considered to be the most dairy in the world.

In the period from 2010 to 2012, this Russian constituent entity was the leader among other regions in terms of milk productivity per cow. At that time, the volume of milk ranged from 7,400 to 7,900 kilograms per year, but since 2013, the volume of milk yields went down, and a year later the region was not even in the top 10 by this indicator.

In this case, experts explain that even the highest-yielding breed of cows needs to be well fed.

In order to increase the indicators, the region needs to create its own fodder base, including the production of a lot of grass seeds, which will grow even in the harsh northern climate. Even now, as a result of many years of work, the breeders have managed to breed 11 varieties and 9 species of fodder grasses. Now, they need to start producing them on an industrial scale.

According to mass media publications, scientists are ready to reproduce super elite seeds at the polar station and give them back for mass reproduction in other regions of Russia where the climate is warmer.

Such cycle of seeds should be passed during four years. During this time, they do not have time to adjust genetically to the southern weather and at the same time receive high productivity, through which they can successfully germinate in the north.
