Continuum Group will launch a flax processing complex in Smolensk region. Its cost exceeds two billion rubles, the company's press service said.

The plant is located near Smolensk in Safonovo industrial park.

It is to process about 12 thousand tons of flax fiber annually, produce more than one thousand tons of long fiber, 2.6 thousand tons of kotonin, and about 2.5 thousand tons of briquettes for heating.

It is planned that the raw material will be supplied to the textile production, and not only in Russia, but also to India and China.

The operator of the project is Russky Flax which has a land bank of 7 thousand hectares in Smolensk Region.

The press-service explains that the immediate proximity of the raw material base is one of the main criteria for the development of production. In the last two years more than 4.5 thousand hectares of fallow lands have been put into operation which have not been cultivated for about 20 years. In the near future the land bank will be increased to 15 thousand hectares.
