Olives started to be planted in greenhouses in Russia as an experiment

Specialists of a Crimean university have started planting olives in greenhouses for the first time. This is done in order to find out whether they can be used in agricultural production, including olive oil production.

Recall that earlier it was reported that in the summer of this year at the university started harvesting planting olive seedlings, and in the village near Simferopol we have built a greenhouse with an area of 0.85 hectares.

A total of 150 olives were planted in the experiment, in a few weeks the same amount will be planted again. In total 500 seedlings will be planted here in 2020. Scientists will first investigate growing subtropical crops in a market model in order to offer farmers a clear scheme for growing and producing this crop in the future.

The planted plants will grow in the steppe, where temperatures range as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius. The greenhouses themselves have a special multi-layer coating with water and electricity. Based on the development, farmers will have the opportunity to produce olives on an industrial scale.

The first harvest is planned for 2026. It is expected that there will be a harvest of three tons of olives. As much as 360 liters of oil will be produced from this amount through cold pressing.
