A new high-precision equipment for laser control of surface defects of flat products for 20 million rubles has been implemented at Chelyabinsk Tube Rolling Plant. The development is unique and has no analogues in the country, according to the company's website.

The automated system was put into operation at the shop that manufactures large diameter pipes. The equipment includes 69 2D laser devices for measurement of surface irregularities and detection of sheet defects starting from 0.2 millimetre in depth. This makes it possible to exclude imperfect sheet metal from the production process.

The Chelyabinsk-based company is one of the country's main suppliers of large-diameter pipes to the industrial sector. The inspection of the rolled sheets using the new unit is not included into the standard documentation for pipes. The plant has introduced this system independently in order to increase the reliability of products.

Valentin Tazetdinov, the Managing Director of the mill, says that the inspection system is an entirely Russian development, "from concept to implementation, and has no counterparts in the pipe industry.

We have previously reported that the plant has modernized the quality control system for large-diameter pipes and equipment for nondestructive testing of seamless pipes.
