Media: Foreign companies may be obliged to pay digital tax in Russia

The Russian authorities may oblige foreign corporations and marketplaces to pay 3% of income which they receive from users in Russia, Forbes writes. In case Russia joins the global taxation system, the amount of tax may change.

As an example, the media cited the social network Facebook - it will have to pay 3% of how much it has earned on payments by Russian citizens or monetization of their impersonal data. The money from such taxes is planned to be used for benefits for Russian digital companies.

In addition, a tax on digital companies, according to the publication, may be introduced similar to what was done in the UK in April this year. There, the tax applies to Amazon, Google and Facebook corporations and amounts to 2% of profits derived from the British users of social networks, search services and online trading platforms.

According to the representative of the Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, the introduction of such a tax is actually being discussed. Thus, the authorities are considering two alternatives. In the first case, the tax could be introduced unilaterally, following the example of the UK, France, Italy and Spain.

In the second option, Russia would join the global system of taxation, which is being worked out by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
