Agribusiness trade turnover between Russia and ASEAN countries increased by 20%

Agricultural commodity turnover between Russia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) increased by 20% in 2020 compared to 2019, amounting to $2.6 billion, the Agroexport center under the Russian Ministry of Agriculture said.

The issues of Russia-ASEAN cooperation and food security for 2021-2025 were discussed during the meeting by Maxim Markovich, director of the Department of International Cooperation and Export Development of Agribusiness Products of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, and Pram Somani, director of the Department of International Cooperation and Export Development of Agribusiness Products of Cambodia.

It was announced at the meeting that in 2020 the trade turnover of agricultural products between Russia and ASEAN member countries will increase by 20 percent to $2.6 billion, and in the first half of 2021 it will increase by more than a quarter to $1.5 billion, Agroexport said.

The parties discussed problems and issues in trade, joint scientific research, development of rural areas, removal of mutual restrictions and trade barriers that prevent the expansion of trade opportunities between the countries.

The Russian side presented two project initiatives aimed at intensifying interaction. They include the development of a platform for mutual communication of the business community of Russia and ASEAN countries, as well as a study of the impact of measures to regulate greenhouse gas emissions on the mutual trade in agro-industrial products.

The presented projects are expected to translate into practice the issues of agriculture adaptation to climate change, accelerate the exchange of information on mitigating its negative impact on food security, and help strengthen cooperation in developing agricultural trade and conducting research in IT technologies aimed at enhancing competitiveness in the international market.
