The first city with a population of one million may appear in the Far East

Vladivostok may become a new city with a population of over one million people. This is possible by combining it with the city of Artem, located nearby, to create a new satellite city. Agreement on the establishment of such an agglomeration may be signed at the Eastern Economic Forum - 2021, says RBC.

According to Alexei Chekunov, the head of the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East, 600 thousand people live in Vladivostok, about 100 thousand live in Artyom. If a new satellite city is built and approximately 300 thousand residents are attracted to the agglomeration, the Primorye capital may become the first major city in the region.

According to him, now authorities are working on a business model of such satellite-town. It is planned to be called Sputnik.

"This word, known worldwide as the moment of the highest triumph of Soviet science, is associated with the launch of the first artificial satellite in October 1957. There is even such an expression in English: Sputnik moment - this is exactly what we need now," he told the publication.

The project is expected to be implemented with the support of VEB.RF, its subsidiary ProGorod, the Far East Development Corporation and the Government of Primorsky Territory. This information was also confirmed by VEB.ru. They added that such an agreement will be signed at the Eastern Economic Forum.
